Introduction

Rizal Boulevard is a well-known seaside promenade and the most popular tourist attraction in Dumaguete City. It is a bustling walkway along the coast of Dumaguete City offering romantic seaside views, the charm and authentic vibes of Dumaguete. It’s known for its cool sea breeze, open spaces, park benches, historical markers and romantic sunset. Rizal Boulevard is surrounded by a myriad of cafes, hotels, bars, and restaurants. From here, locals and tourists can easily access other landmarks such as the Quezon Park, the Dumaguete Cathedral, the Silliman University, and the Dumaguete Port. 

According to its history, Rizal Boulevard was built in 1916 and it’s named after Dr. Jose Rizal who is recognized as the Philippines National Hero. In 1896, Dr. Jose Rizal, a prominent Filipino nationalist, made a brief but memorable visit to Dumaguete accompanied by his sister, Narcisa, the Sunico couple, three nephews and his Irish companion, Josephine Bracken. He immersed himself in the town’s vibrant culture. Rizal explored the homes of local families, including the Gonzales, Rufinas, Periquet and Don Mariano Pinili, indulging in local delicacies and reconnecting with old friends such as Herrero Regidor. His keen eye for architectural details led him to admire the Dumagueteños love for floral adornments. Rizal was impressed by beautiful houses with galvanized iron roofs that he saw while walking on the beach. One house owned by a woman particularly stood out. Rizal observations recorded in his travel diary, provide a valuable glimpse into Dumaguete’s life during the Spanish colonial period. His visit left an indelible mark on the town’s past and solidified its place in the archives of Philippine history. So whether you’re planning a visit or just want to relive the charm of Dumaguete City, this boulevard shows you exactly why Dumaguete City is so beloved by many and holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors.

My trip to Rizal Boulevard Dumaguete

After booking a Philippine Airlines flight bound for Dumaguete City, I immediately searched on the internet the popular places to visit in Dumaguete and the hotel that I’d be staying at. Fast forward, it was Thursday afternoon on a fine weather when I arrived at Dumaguete Airport and I immediately hire a tricycle going to the hotel and after checking in at the hotel, I walk outside towards Rizal Boulevard because it’s one of the most popular places in Negros Oriental base on my research and I want to find out why it stood out for local and foreign tourist. After five minutes of walking, I reached the boulevard and as I explored and observed the place it looked so peaceful, vibrant, and welcoming.

I really enjoyed watching a lot of people just relaxing and enjoying the pleasant afternoon. In my opinion, it is a charming boulevard because of its laid-back lifestyle and vibrant food scene as well as the picturesque view of the sea. To be honest, I can stay on this boulevard for six hours and I’ll never get bored. In the afternoon, I can see couples, families and friends taking photos on the boulevard. I like the slow life here and just having a seaside stroll. Also, Rizal Boulevard is lined up with lush trees, benches, and historic colonial-style white lamp posts that gives a romantic and nostalgic vibe for leisurely strolls. Moreover, it’s surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and hotels that cater to different tastes and budgets. 

As the sun sets in mellow, I notice that the boulevard slowly comes to life. I can see many street vendors preparing food, children play, families gather, and the soft glow of lights creates a warm, relaxed, comfortable, inviting and welcoming atmosphere.  No wonder Rizal Boulevard holds a big part in the city’s provincial charm. Then I saw the bronze statue of Dr. Jose Rizal and it takes me back to history. In the evening, I can see the boulevard transform into a lively and festive place, with street vendors, and park-goers. I was impressed by how lively yet peaceful the boulevard or open space feels. No distractions and just the natural flow of life in Dumaguete. In my opinion, the boulevard sums up the city life here. Everyone seemed so relaxed and friendly and it looked like an ideal place for an evening stroll and watch the people go by.  

Afterward, I tried some street food from any of the stands and watched some live music performances along the boulevard while simply sitting. It’s great to be here at this moment of time so I’d stay for a few hours. Then I took pictures at the “I love Dumaguete” sign and told myself that I will be back in this place again.

The next day I wake up early and visit Rizal Boulevard in the morning and I can see many people walking, jogging, biking, doing zumba and simply enjoying the fresh air and the sunrise along the paved pathway. I think it’s a great way to start the day and get some exercise. I loved taking in the scenery along the boulevard. It’s a great day to spend here just enjoying the waves and the boats coming in and out of the harbor. The whole area is very beautiful and charming and I hope Dumaguete City can preserve the beauty of this place. In my opinion, it’s an ideal spot for pre-nuptial shoots because of the stunning backdrop of the sea and the sky. It’s definitely worth a visit and I have unforgettable memories here. Before I left Dumaguete City, I told myself that in the coming years I will go back to this captivating small but homey boulevard to enjoy once again the relaxing vibe.

How to Go to Rizal Boulevard Dumaguete

From Metro Manila, ride an airplane bound to Dumaguete. Then from Dumaguete airport ride a tricycle and tell the driver to drop you off at Rizal Boulevard or Dumaguete City proper. Note: Rizal Boulevard is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the airport.

Reminders and Tips:

• The best time to visit Rizal Boulevard is early in the morning and around 5pm until the evening when the weather is nice and the boulevard is lively.
  
  
• Strictly no smoking in all public places and put your trash in the designated bins.
  
  
• If you want delicious silvanas and butter‑laden delicacies, you can visit the Sans Rival Cakes & Pastries which is just beside the boulevard.
