Daraga Church
Introduction
Daraga Church also known as Nuestra Señora De la Porteria (Our Lady of Gate) is an 18th century baroque style church that sits atop a hill in Daraga Albay which provides church-goers and local tourists an unobstructed view of Mayon Volcano. It is located just behind Daraga Municipal Hall in the municipality of Daraga and is six kilometers away from Legazpi City. Throughout the years, the iconic church has played a substantial role in the religious and cultural life of the community.
According to its history, Daraga Church was built in 1773 by Franciscan priests. It was made of stone and it’s an example of the Baroque style according to the skill of Filipino workers during the Spanish era in the Philippines. In 1814, the Cagsawa believers moved here after the Cagsawa church was destroyed in the enormous Mayon Volcano eruption. In 1854, the church was dedicated to the Patronato of Nuestra Señora De La Porteria. During World War 2, the church was used as a Japanese headquarters and was destroyed in 1945. It was renovated in 1971 up to 1973 and they made sure that the unscathed stones still exist and renovated only the impaired areas. In 2007, the National Historical Institute declared the church as a National Cultural Treasure which is the country’s highest designation for a cultural property. Today, Daraga Church is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Bicol region because of its historical significance and the picturesque surroundings with the majestic Mayon Volcano as a backdrop. The church remains an active place of worship, hosting masses, and pilgrimages. So if you’re into heritage churches in the Philippines, then this is a must visit and you can include this in your itinerary in your Albay tour.

My trip to Daraga Church
As part of our Bicol trip, we visited one of the most visited churches in Albay, the Our Lady of the Gate Parish which is popularly known as Daraga Church, it is located on a hilltop with a beautiful view of Mayon Volcano. The moment we arrived at the church, the facade of the church caught my attention. Its facade is mostly volcanic stones and it has four spiral columns, each with medallions that have images of the four evangelists. The church’s facade also carries the coat of arms of the Franciscan Order, images of Franciscan saints, and of course, the image of Our Lady of the Gate. In addition, I see the 2007 National Historical Institute marker in the facade. It is really an old church as I can see on the walls, though it is old, I love the architectural design and it is such a very beautiful old church. Moreover, the church belfry or belltower caught my attention because it has four levels and each tapered upwards and topped with a dome and cross.

As we roam outside, the panoramic views from the right side of the church are simply unrivalled because of its upraised location, offering a placid, picture-postcard setting to appreciate the majestic symmetry of Mayon Volcano. Tourists like us can enjoy a sweeping view of the majestic Mayon Volcano and the surrounding town. The view here is nothing short of spectacular and I am so overwhelmed by the view even though the thick clouds sometimes hide the Mayon Volcano. The awesome man-made structure that is the beautiful Daraga Church blended harmoniously with the Gods creation that is the most perfectly cone-shaped volcano in the world, the majestic Mayon Volcano. Indeed, man’s artwork complimented God’s artwork. What a masterpiece! In my point of view, Daraga Church is a beautiful piece of Spanish colonial architecture perched on a hilltop overlooking the city of Legazpi.

Then as we went inside the church, I noticed the long isle from the main door to the altar complements the simplicity of the interior of the church. Far from the grayish ash color of the church’s outer architecture, inside are white painted walls and ceilings. Also, I recount the rich history of this church by seeing the ornate interior of the church and religious artifacts. Without a doubt, the church is filled with a sense of chronicles and devoutness. From my perspective, Daraga Church is a rare and outstanding example of Baroque style architecture in the Philippines.

A few moments later, there’s a mass being held and I told myself that the Daraga Church is one of the best places to attend a mass due to its solemnity and it offers a majestic view of the perfect cone of Mayon Volcano. Furthermore, I realized that the complex details, exquisitely crafted facades, and striking interiors makes Daraga Church a fascinating sight for photographers and architecture enthusiasts. Truly, I fell in love with the church and based on my experience traveling with older people, they really like visiting churches. Overall, the peaceful charm of the church made it such a memorable experience. Anyway, after visiting the historic church, we went to Farm Plate and Highlands Park Legazpi to continue enjoying the peaceful atmosphere in Albay.
